Jasmine Rice (Thai Takeaway Style – Rice Cooker Method)

Thai Takeaway Style Jasmine Rice In A Serving Bowl

Soft, fragrant Thai takeaway style jasmine rice, – perfect with chilli & Thai basil pork.

I spent a long time telling myself I was quite satisfied with rice made in a pot on the stove top. And I was – you can absolutely make good rice that way. But, having invested in a rice cooker a couple of years ago, I was an immediate convert. The positives of a rice cooker are many. As well as perfectly cooked rice, features like a timer setting and keep warm mode are convenient. It’s also handy not to have hob space taken up by rice, leaving more space to cook stir-fry sauces and curry dishes while the rice takes care of itself.

Soft, fluffy jasmine rice is deliciously fragrant. In fact, it’s often called ‘Thai fragrant rice’. It’s a long-grain rice and is great for absorbing copious amounts of curry sauce or stir-fry sauce. I like Royal Umbrella jasmine rice.

Ingredients For Thai Takeaway Style Jasmine Rice

To make restaurant style jasmine rice, I like Green Dragon or Royal Umbrella jasmine rice. Also known as ‘fragrant rice’, Thai jasmine rice has a mild flavour and soft texture. It’s great paired with stir-fry and curry dishes as it soaks up the sauces well.

How To Make Thai Takeaway Style Jasmine Rice

To make one large takeaway sized portion of rice I use 1 rice cooker cup of jasmine rice. Before letting the rice cooker do its thing, the rice needs to be washed with a few changes of fresh water to get rid of excess starch.

Step 1: Rinse Jasmine Rice

Pour 1 rice cooker cup of jasmine rice into a sieve positioned over a bowl. Cover with fresh water, and agitate the rice gently with your hands until the water becomes cloudy. Drain the cloudy water and repeat the step twice more until the water runs clear and all the excess starch is removed from the rice. Drain once more and tip the rice into the inner bowl of your rice cooker.

Step 2: Cook

Add water to the inner bowl to the ‘1’ mark. Set the rice cooker to ‘long grain’ setting and cook. Once the rice cooker indicates that the rice is cooked, use a rice spoon to gently stir and fluff up the rice. Close the rice cooker lid and let the rice sit on keep warm mode for 10 minutes before serving.

Step 3: Serve

Stir the rice gently once more with a rice spoon. Take a bowl and fill it with cooked rice. Turn the bowl on to a plate, then lift to reveal the cooked rice. Garnish with sesame seeds if desired and serve with your favourite stir-fry and curry dishes.
