Peking Sauce (Chinese Takeaway Style)

This Chinese takeaway style peking sauce is made up of a mix of ingredients, some more easy to find than others. If you’re lucky enough to have a Chinese supermarket close by, you’ll be able to find O.K sauce, a tangy and fruity brown sauce. Or, you can buy it here. If you’re unable to find it, you can use any supermarket brown sauce with good, if different results.

How To Make Chinese Takeaway Style Peking Sauce

To make this simple Chinese takeaway style peking sauce, the ingredients are simply simmered together in a pot until combined. The mix is thickened with potato starch to create the classic peking sauce consistency.

Step 1: Simmer Peking Sauce

In a pot over a medium heat, add 2 generous tablespoons tomato ketchup2 tablespoons O.K sauce1 teaspoon hoisin sauce1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce1 tablespoon golden syrup1 teaspoon rice wine2 teaspoons rice wine vinegar1/4 teaspoon smoked garlic powderPinch MSG1/4 teaspoon beetroot powder and 175 millilitres pork stock or water. Bring to the boil, reduce the heat to low and simmer for 2 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Step 2: Thicken & Serve

Slowly add 1 tablespoon potato starch, mixed with 2 tablespoons water, mixing well until the sauce reaches the desired consistency (all of the mix may not be needed). Transfer the Chinese takeaway style peking sauce to a serving bowl and serve.
